Power Toothbrush Recommendation

Power Toothbrush Recommendation

[vc_row][vc_column][vc_column_text][/vc_column_text][vc_column_text]My patients often ask me what type of power brushes they should buy for routine oral hygiene to achieve optimum oral health.

There are many types of power brushes on the market today, and the most important thing to keep in mind is the reciprocation/minute the power brush has; i.e. the more the reciprocation/minute a power brush has, the more it has been shown to effectively disrupt plaque and biofilm. A reciprocation of up to 48,000 times per minute is ideal.

Other less important but nice things you might want to consider from a power tooth brush are, if the motor is removable and brush heads interchangeable, so that a family can share the motor, if cost is an issue. Also, some power brushes come with color options, which can interest pediatric patients. If it has options for power mode, lower speed modes can be used for periodontal or gingival massaging. Some power toothbrush manufacturers are including a Bluetooth option, which can be paired with a smart type phone which has video capability. This can help track which areas are receiving more attention from the brusher and remind them to put more care into other areas receiving less attention.

At Smile League Dental, creating awareness for oral health, and educating you about your oral health is our priority.

Into tissue/umbilical cord banking? Think baby tooth also!

Into tissue/umbilical cord banking? Think baby tooth also!

[vc_row type=”vc_default” css=”.vc_custom_1474268037787{margin-bottom: -30px !important;padding-bottom: 30px !important;}”][vc_column offset=”vc_col-lg-12 vc_col-md-12 vc_col-xs-12″][vc_column_text]Have you ever thought of banking your child’s umbilical cord or tissues, but could not get to it? Well you still have a chance to do so, with your child’s baby tooth!

Even if you have banked your child’s umbilical cord, dental stem cells have different applications, and have been shown to have the capacity to regenerate into different tissues!

DENTAL STEM CELLS AND TISSUE BANKING

According to National Institutes of Health, Stem cells are unspecialized cells capable of renewing themselves through cell division, and can be induced to become tissue or organ specific cells with specialized function.

Tissue banking has arisen in the wake of modern medicine, and will continue as a future trend, especially in the fields of pathology and clinical research to help combat diseases like cancers, and for the chance of DNA specific regenerative procedures.

THE REGENERATION PROCESS

Dentistry has not been left out of the regeneration process, as baby teeth have been found to have a good amount of dental stem cells. Dental stem cells do not have the definitive time periods, unlike traditional umbilical cord blood and tissue banking, thus providing parents more time to make this banking decision.

Dental stem cell harvesting process works by removing/extracting baby teeth, especially if there is a reason to do so. Baby teeth that have fallen out on their own or are loose, however, are not a very good source of stem cells. If there are no reasons to take out baby tooth, a second opportunity arises with wisdom teeth, as dental stem cells can also be found in the nerve tissues of wisdom teeth.

The process of banking a stem cell is fairly easy for the patient. According to Malterud, the processes are outlined thus:

-After the tooth is extracted by the dentist, it is stored in a jar provided by the banking company, which contains a preservative solution.

-The jar is packaged with ice pack and sent to the banking company for a Next day air shipping

-The company washes and disinfects the tissues, sections the tooth, and pulls out the live pulp tissues which contains the stem cells.

-The company then begins to plate and grow the stem cells into a colony with several million cells, and then they cryogenically freeze these cells.

Although tissue banking can be financially demanding, it is believed that this process may one day save life- now, nothing tops that! Do speak to you dentist about this option.

At Smile League Dental, we are committed to the clinical application of Evidence Based Research for the advancement and wellness of mankind.

Young Adults and E-cigarettes

Young Adults and E-cigarettes

Hello Everyone,

Welcome to our blog. This edition features about use of E-cigarettes among young adults/teenagers, also known as Juuling among this age group.

According to Center for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC), Americans are smoking less. That is actually Good News, as it shows that efforts to combat smoking in the population is effective.

That being said, Electronic cigarettes are becoming more popular among young adults and teenagers. According to the National Institute on Drug Abuse, “E-cigarettes are now the most commonly used form of tobacco among youth in the United States. Their easy availability, alluring advertisements, various e-liquid flavors and the belief that they’re safer than cigarettes have helped make them appealing to this age group”.

The advertisement for E-cigarettes is very catchy to youths, because they present as slick possessions, in the form of USB drives, and are easily concealed from parents, teachers, or guardians. Invariably, the use of E-cigarettes are viewed as the next cool stuff among the group. Although the overall health effect of E-cigarette is not completely known, E-cigarettes contain Nicotine, which is a highly addictive substance. The danger of use among this group is that for developing brains, it is harder to stop/quit this addiction, as the brain learn to really depend on it to function. Also, according to the National Institute of Health, “E-cigarette use may serve as an introductory product for preteens and teens who then go on to use other tobacco products, including cigarettes, which are known to cause disease and premature death”.

Studies also suggest that the vapor in E-cigarettes cause significant damage to oral tissues, which can result in oral diseases.

WHAT TO DO AS THE PARENT OF A YOUTH/TEEN

Be proactive about warning young adults/adolescents about the dangers of Juuling.

Communicate strongly but gently, about the health effects of nicotine and other potential carcinogens present in E-cigarettes. Let them know that it is not just flavoring in the E-cigarettes, but actual chemicals, which are very dangerous to their health.
