Ultimately, your tooth starts to decay and becomes inflamed, resulting in sensitivity issues when you eat hot or cold food. As a result, you feel excruciating pain and discomfort. If you’re experiencing these symptoms and searching for an affordable root canal, or root canal Joliet, our expert team is here to help you with a professional root canal treatment.

Medicaid Dentist in Joliet, IL – Dental Care for Adults and Children

Finding a dentist who accepts your Medicaid insurance shouldn’t be complicated. However, not every dental office participates in every Illinois Medicaid plan, and understanding your benefits can sometimes be confusing.

At Smile League Dental, we offer limited Medicaid dental services for eligible adults and children in Joliet, Illinois. Our goal is to help patients understand their insurance options, identify available services, and obtain appropriate dental care.

Our office is located at 3330 Mall Loop Drive in Joliet. We welcome patients from Joliet and surrounding communities who are looking for affordable dental care.

Because Medicaid participation, treatment availability, and coverage requirements can vary, we ask all Medicaid patients to contact our office before scheduling.

Call 815-782-6243 to discuss your insurance, confirm whether we currently accept your specific plan, and inquire about available appointments.

Does Smile League Dental Accept Illinois Medicaid?

Yes. Smile League Dental offers limited services to Medicaid patients, including eligible adults and children. However, acceptance depends on your specific insurance plan, the dental services you need, and appointment availability.

We encourage prospective patients to contact us before visiting our office.

Which Illinois Medicaid Plans Do We Accept?

Illinois offers Medicaid coverage through traditional Medicaid and several managed care organizations.

HealthChoice Illinois plans available statewide include Aetna Better Health of Illinois, Blue Cross Community Health Plans, Meridian Health Plan, and Molina Healthcare. YouthCare also serves certain eligible current and former youth in care.

These are examples of Illinois Medicaid plans, not a confirmed list of plans accepted by Smile League Dental. Our participation must be verified individually. HFS

When contacting our office, please provide the exact name of your Medicaid plan and explain what type of dental care you need.

An important distinction is that accepting an insurance company’s commercial dental plan does not automatically mean a dental office participates in that company’s Medicaid network.

For example, a practice accepting commercial Aetna insurance may not necessarily accept Aetna Better Health of Illinois.

Our staff can help you determine whether your particular coverage is accepted before you schedule an appointment.

What If I Have Traditional Illinois Medicaid?

Some patients receive dental benefits through traditional Illinois Medicaid rather than a managed care organization.

If you have traditional Medicaid, let our office know when you call. We can discuss whether we currently accept your coverage and provide the services you need.

The Illinois Department of Healthcare and Family Services also recommends DentaQuest as a resource for patients enrolled in traditional Medicaid who need help finding participating dental providers.

DentaQuest can be reached at 1-888-286-2447

Medicaid Dental Coverage for Adults in Joliet

Adults with Illinois Medicaid may qualify for preventive, diagnostic, restorative, and other dental services, depending on their coverage and clinical circumstances.

Understanding which procedures are covered is particularly important because having Medicaid does not mean every dental treatment will automatically be approved.

The Illinois Medicaid dental program provides adult benefits that may include examinations, cleanings, fillings, extractions, certain root canals, and qualifying denture services. Some treatments have frequency limitations, clinical requirements, or prior authorization requirements.

Routine Dental Care for Adults

Preventive dental care helps identify problems before they develop into more serious conditions.

Under Illinois’ published dental program guidelines, eligible adults may qualify for a routine dental examination and cleaning once every 12 months.

Diagnostic X-rays and other examinations may also be covered when applicable coverage requirements are satisfied.

Patients should understand that Medicaid’s coverage of a particular procedure does not guarantee that every participating dental office provides that procedure.

When you call Smile League Dental, explain whether you need a routine examination, cleaning, or treatment for an existing dental problem. We can discuss our current Medicaid service availability.

Fillings, Extractions, and Other Dental Treatments

Illinois Medicaid may cover restorative procedures designed to treat tooth decay and preserve natural teeth.

Depending on eligibility and clinical requirements, these services can include fillings, certain root canal procedures, tooth extractions, and qualifying dental restorations.

Some more extensive treatments require prior authorization or are subject to additional restrictions.

Our office offers a range of general and restorative dental services. However, the treatments we offer under Medicaid are limited and may differ from the services available to patients with other insurance coverage.

Please verify acceptance and treatment availability before your appointment.

Medicaid Dental Care for Children in Joliet

Children generally have broader dental benefits under Illinois Medicaid than adults.

Illinois provides comprehensive dental benefits for eligible children and young adults under age 21. Coverage focuses on prevention, early identification of dental problems, and medically necessary treatment.

Depending on the child’s coverage and treatment requirements, covered services may include routine examinations, cleanings, fluoride applications, dental sealants, fillings, root canals, treatment for gum disease, and tooth extractions.

Smile League Dental offers limited Medicaid services for eligible pediatric patients. Parents should contact our office to confirm whether we accept their child’s plan and offer the particular treatment needed.

Why Preventive Dental Care Matters for Children

Developing healthy dental habits early can help children avoid painful and expensive dental problems later.

Tooth decay can develop even when children brush regularly. Routine dental appointments allow dentists to identify cavities, evaluate tooth development, and recommend preventive treatment when appropriate.

Illinois Medicaid generally covers routine dental examinations and cleanings for eligible children at six-month intervals, subject to applicable program rules.

Certain fluoride treatments and dental sealants may also be covered.

Sealants provide a protective barrier over the chewing surfaces of teeth and can help prevent cavities in vulnerable areas.

The Illinois Department of Healthcare and Family Services recommends that children receive dental care beginning at approximately their first birthday, or earlier when dental problems develop.

Does Illinois All Kids Cover Dental Treatment?

Illinois All Kids provides healthcare coverage to eligible children, including dental benefits.

Depending on the child’s specific coverage, dental benefits can include preventive care, diagnostic services, and medically necessary treatment.

However, a child’s eligibility for All Kids does not automatically establish that every dental office accepts their particular coverage.

If your child is enrolled in All Kids, contact Smile League Dental before scheduling so we can review your insurance information and discuss available services.

What Dental Procedures Might Illinois Medicaid Cover?

Understanding the difference between Medicaid coverage and a dental office’s treatment availability is essential.

Illinois Medicaid establishes which procedures may qualify for payment. Your particular plan determines applicable benefit rules, while the dental office determines which eligible patients and services it can accommodate.

Examples of potentially covered services include the following:

Dental Service Adult Coverage Children’s Coverage
Routine dental examinations Generally covered with limitations Generally covered
Dental cleanings Generally once every 12 months Generally every six months
Dental X-rays Subject to applicable requirements Subject to applicable requirements
Dental fillings Covered when qualifying requirements are met Generally covered when medically necessary
Tooth extractions Covered when qualifying requirements are met Generally covered when medically necessary
Root canals Certain procedures may qualify Covered when applicable requirements are met
Dental crowns Certain procedures may qualify; restrictions apply Certain procedures may qualify
Dentures Certain services may qualify; authorization may be required Limited to qualifying circumstances

These examples summarize Illinois’ published dental program guidance. They are not a guarantee of benefits under an individual managed care plan or a list of procedures Smile League Dental provides to Medicaid patients.

Patients seeking extensive restorative treatment should confirm coverage before beginning treatment.

Dental implants and certain cosmetic procedures are generally not covered under Illinois’ standard Medicaid dental program.

Medicaid Dental Emergencies in Joliet

Dental emergencies can happen unexpectedly. A severe toothache, broken tooth, dental infection, or traumatic injury may require prompt attention.

Smile League Dental provides emergency dental services in Joliet, including treatment for patients experiencing toothaches and other urgent dental problems.

However, emergency appointment availability for Medicaid patients is subject to insurance acceptance, the services required, and our current schedule.

Although our practice offers same-day emergency appointments when available, we cannot guarantee same-day treatment for Medicaid patients.

What Should I Do If I Have a Dental Emergency?

Call Smile League Dental at 815-782-6243 as soon as possible.

Explain your symptoms, identify your insurance plan, and describe how long you have been experiencing the problem.

Our staff can discuss appointment availability and whether we can accommodate your insurance and treatment needs.

If we cannot provide the required treatment, contact your Medicaid plan’s member services department for assistance finding an appropriate participating provider.

Severe facial swelling accompanied by difficulty breathing or swallowing requires immediate emergency medical attention. Do not delay medical care while waiting for a dental appointment or insurance verification.

How Medicaid Insurance Verification Works

Insurance verification is an important step in determining whether we can schedule your appointment.

When you contact Smile League Dental, we will need information about your insurance and the dental treatment you are seeking.

Our staff can review the information you provide and discuss our current participation and appointment availability.

If your plan is accepted, the next step is to determine whether the requested procedure is potentially covered.

Some treatments require additional documentation or authorization before insurance will approve payment.

Remember that preliminary insurance verification is not a guarantee of coverage or payment.

Your eligibility must remain active on the date of service, and final coverage depends on your plan’s applicable rules.

Patients should also understand that our office offers limited Medicaid services. Even if a procedure is ordinarily covered by Illinois Medicaid, it may not be available through our office under your particular plan.

What Should Medicaid Patients Bring to Their First Appointment?

Arriving prepared helps prevent unnecessary delays and makes the insurance verification process easier.

We recommend bringing the following:

  • Your current Medicaid or managed care insurance card.
  • A valid photo ID, if available.
  • Your child’s insurance information if scheduling for a minor.
  • A list of medications and relevant medical conditions.
  • Any recent dental records or X-rays you have available.
  • Information about your dental symptoms and previous treatment.

If you recently changed Medicaid plans, received a new insurance card, or renewed your benefits, please notify our office before your appointment.

We also recommend arriving early enough to complete any necessary patient registration information.

What If Medicaid Does Not Cover My Dental Treatment?

Sometimes a recommended dental procedure is not covered by a patient’s insurance.

Other situations involve services that are covered by Illinois Medicaid but are unavailable through our office under the patient’s particular plan.

When treatment is not covered, it is important to understand your options and any potential financial responsibility before proceeding.

Smile League Dental offersCareCredit and Cherry Finance for qualifying out-of-pocket dental expenses. However, we do not offer in-house payment plans.

Changes From The Passing of H.R. 1, Public Law 119-21in July 2025

CountyCare is committed to working with providers and community partners to help members understand these changes and take the necessary steps to maintain their Medicaid coverage.

Recently, letters were sent to some Illinois Medicaid enrollees informing them of upcoming changes to eligibility as a result of federal legislation, also known as H.R. 1 or the One Big Beautiful Bill Act.

Medicaid enrollees who received these letters included:

  • ~8,400 non-citizens/qualified immigrants statewide – this group was informed that they would no longer qualify for Medicaid starting October 1, 2026
  • ~700,000 Affordable Care Act adults statewide – this group was informed about new eligibility requirements in 2027 including twice per year redetermination and work requirements.

The notices that were sent to these Medicaid enrollees are linked here:

Illinois Healthcare and Family Services (HFS) intends to share more details about the work requirements, including information about exemptions, at a later date. To support Medicaid members, providers can:

1. Encourage members to keep their contact information current: Members should make sure HFS has their current address, phone number and email address. Keeping contact information up to date helps ensure members receive important notices. Members can update their information by:
a. Logging into the ABE Illinois system  b. Visiting the HFS Account Changes website for instructions
c. Calling 1-877-805-5312
2. Check a member’s Medicaid coverage type (also known as line of business or LOB):
CountyCare has developed a Provider Portal Quick Reference Guide explaining how to locate a member’s Medicaid coverage type and other important eligibility information. CountyCare members can also call CountyCare at 312-864-8200 to ask what type of Medicaid/Line of Business they have.

3. Encourage ACA adult members to prepare for more frequent renewals:
Remind ACA adult members that they will need to renew their Medicaid coverage every 6 months starting in 2027 (after their full year of coverage that started in 2026 ends). Encourage members to:
a. Read and respond to all notices from HFS
b. Complete renewal forms by the deadline
c. Submit requested documents promptly

What Changes Are Being Made to Medicaid?
1. New Work, Education, or Volunteer Requirements (also called “community engagement requirements” or just “work requirements”) for Affordable Care Act (ACA) adults
In Illinois, Medicaid enrollees will need to meet the work requirement for one month during their “eligibility period” (unless they have been deemed exempt from this requirement). After ACA members’ first redetermination in 2027, their case will now be reviewed for eligibility every 6 months instead of every 12 months. They will need to meet or be exempt from the work requirement for one month during that 6-month period of review.

ACA adults enrolled in 2026 will receive a full 12-months of Medicaid coverage before the new requirements apply to them. Medicaid applications submitted after December 31, 2026, at 5 pm CST, for newly enrolledACA Medicaid enrollees will need to comply, immediately.

2. More Frequent Medicaid Renewals for ACA Adults
ACA adults will be required to complete Medicaid eligibility renewals every 6 months instead of every 12 months. Members should be prepared to respond to renewal notices and provide information requested by HFS to avoid losing coverage for procedural reasons.

3) Changes to Medicaid Eligibility for Certain Non-Citizens
Beginning October 1, 2026, federal changes will narrow the categories of non-citizens who qualify for full Medicaid coverage. These changes are expected to result in approximately 8,400 Illinois non-citizen Medicaid enrollees losing coverage, including approximately 2,000 CountyCare members. HFS has sent information to affected members.

Any private-pay arrangements for Medicaid patients must comply with applicable Medicaid billing requirements. We can discuss available options when appropriate.
