Hello Everyone,

Welcome to our blog. This edition features about use of E-cigarettes among young adults/teenagers, also known as Juuling among this age group.

According to Center for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC), Americans are smoking less. That is actually Good News, as it shows that efforts to combat smoking in the population is effective.

That being said, Electronic cigarettes are becoming more popular among young adults and teenagers. According to the National Institute on Drug Abuse, “E-cigarettes are now the most commonly used form of tobacco among youth in the United States. Their easy availability, alluring advertisements, various e-liquid flavors and the belief that they’re safer than cigarettes have helped make them appealing to this age group”.

The advertisement for E-cigarettes is very catchy to youths, because they present as slick possessions, in the form of USB drives, and are easily concealed from parents, teachers, or guardians. Invariably, the use of E-cigarettes are viewed as the next cool stuff among the group. Although the overall health effect of E-cigarette is not completely known, E-cigarettes contain Nicotine, which is a highly addictive substance. The danger of use among this group is that for developing brains, it is harder to stop/quit this addiction, as the brain learn to really depend on it to function. Also, according to the National Institute of Health, “E-cigarette use may serve as an introductory product for preteens and teens who then go on to use other tobacco products, including cigarettes, which are known to cause disease and premature death”.

Studies also suggest that the vapor in E-cigarettes cause significant damage to oral tissues, which can result in oral diseases.

WHAT TO DO AS THE PARENT OF A YOUTH/TEEN

Be proactive about warning young adults/adolescents about the dangers of Juuling.

Communicate strongly but gently, about the health effects of nicotine and other potential carcinogens present in E-cigarettes. Let them know that it is not just flavoring in the E-cigarettes, but actual chemicals, which are very dangerous to their health.
